Nero, the Wicked Roman Emperor.
The number 666 has nothing to do with the Devil but it sure is feared by Xtians and it should be here's why:
Nero who's full name was Nero Claudius Augustus Germanicus was born December 15, 37 in Antium, Italy. He was the fifth emperor of the Roman Empire. He held this position from the year 54 all the way up until his death when he committed suicide by intentionally poisoning himself. Nero was much feared and hated by Christians because of the strong stance he took against them and their teachings. He defended himself and his empire by using brutal and sadistic means. Which he used very effectively to keep the Christians at bay for quite sometime.
Nero believed himself to be the Sun God Apollo and actively encouraged and promoted emperor worship which normally only involved placing a pinch of incense on an altar. Which the Christians still refused to do so they were tortured and killed in record numbers. This was also the time of John the Revelator who declared Nero the Anti-Christ.
It was common public knowledge then that Neros own number was 666, since each letter of the Greek and Hebrew alphabets had numerical equivalents equalling a persons name.
Nero's name in Greek (Kaiser Neon) represented by Hebrew letters (QSR NRWN) which also function as numbers.
The letters Numerical value is:
Q=60
S=100
R=200
N=50
W=6
QSR NRWN (60+100+200+50+200+6+50)= 666.
Nero's name in Latin (Neron) represented by letters which also function as numbers.
N=50
E=6
R=500
O=60
N=50
Neron (50+6+500+60+50)= 666
So why did John not talk about Nero in a more direct way? Well the answer is simple Christians were so terrified of this man that they naturally spoke to each other in a coded language so that Nero's forces would not be privy to there conversations. Although Nero committed suicide in 68
many Christians believed he would rise from the dead in the future as the Antichrist.
